yeah right. Maybe 1 out of 1000 drivers of these cars takes them on a race track. The other 999 are beating everyone to the red light while getting 14 MPG.
Why are you trying to interfere with our god-given right to waste as much fuel as possible?
It's almost as if you want the terrorists to win or something
Personally I need at least 500hp to deal with traffic like this
In the end it's not really worth it to me because I don't feel like I'd get value for money unless I lived near a race track (road course). But even then hot lapping gets old and you'd get the itch to race... and that's when things get REALLY expensive.
What is the point of all these fast 400-500 HP cars? They're fun, to be sure - but how can you safely and legally ever use that power? With budget cuts, the police are more aggressive with ticketing than ever, the fines are steeper and insurance costs are worse.
So either you take the risk and drive like a bandit anyway, or you just have a high powered machine that you cannot actually use.
I've noticed that some of the slowest cars on the road are not the Prius, but Mustangs, Camaros and Porsches. Presumably because these drivers have already been slapped hard with expensive speeding tickets.
Great posts and great rationale. Repped...
I own fast cars and I wonder what I am doing with them as well. Sometimes it is just a habit. I used to drive fast cars FAST in a State that didn't give a crap. Now I live in the worst State of all for it...Virginia. Reckless driving and up to a year in jail at 81MPH.
They will use them when you bait them. Having the HP is about the choice. Just because one has a 400-500 HP car doesn't make they will drive around like that all the time. I'll take a 400-500 HP car over an normal one on an entrance ramp anyday. High HP doesn't equate to having to speed 100% of the time.

Go at 66 on a 65 zone and you could get a ticket for $235 or so. I don't think they will be interested in putting you in jail at their expense unless you are caught DUI or some...
You're mistaken if you think 400 hp car is "fast".
Most german mid size sedans come with 400 plus standard. I am talking E550 / 550i.
Heck, their performance variants actually are cresting the 600 mark. think E63 / M5 / RS6
And now coming to your point as regards whats the point of a 400 hp plus car on street.
1) Just because the speed limit is 65 mph, there are other factors as well. Like getting to that speed limit. 0-60 in 4 secs is a LOT FASTER than 0-60 in 7 seconds.
2) Speed limit is not every thing. Superior power curve / delivery / tonnes of torque / exhaust set up / acceleration ( 40-60) all act together. I can go 45- 75 and back to 45 faster than most cars can go 45-55. That exciting. That helps in overtaking. And a 500HP sedan with good brakes / suspension setup and well balanced chassis will do it comfortably.
3) Fun factor - the cars with more HP (and or lesser weight) will always be more fun.
4) Money? they've the $$$$ to spend. Don't care about the gas. Seriously, when I buy a $84k car, I am not fizzled by the extra $20 it'll cost me to refill every week.
