To me, blackwalls look plain. Kind of like a bare-bones economy tire.
LOL they don't look that bad now.

I'm guessing that the tires on many newer vehicles have low profiles and larger diameters. It seems like a larger wheel really sticks out with a plain sidewall.

"They scream detroit tackiness".

This makes me laugh when people have to post their opinion as fact. Like there is no opposing view.

Mostly they disappeared because of style. Many people who have classic cars or who put work into their cars and preffer white walls will still have them.
Currently the fashion is blacking out everything except for the ocassional red or yellow brake calipers.
Many custom motorcycles have white walls. Its a classic look and depending on the custom, can make the design pop. White walls work well with choppers and bobbers.

Well since this long dead thread has been brought back to life, I have to comment. Three of my cars have whitewalls, wide whitewalls (hot rods). I built them in the style of 1950's cars, and they would not be the same without them.

Now, would those look good on the 2004 Mustang I am building right now ? No, but that is an entirely different look.

I also think white walls lost favor because they are a lot of work to keep white. But a little Wesleys Tire White, and they look great again.

They seemed to go away around the mid 90's.

White rubber became too expensive. The area where white rubber is mined became protected to protect the habitat of the albino marmoset.

Wouldn't have been much to give up, had albino marmosets been in actual need of protection.
