I have on and off bought used tires. Almost entirely with satisfaction. A guy with a tire shop nearby almost always has used tires to fit most applications. I just got a couple of Michelin tires with about 80% tread for the front of my old 95 Cougar, paid less for both of them mounted and balanced than a new tire would have cost, delivered to my porch by Tire Rack. They are 7 years old so people who take the 6 year "rule" literally would consider me in violation. The front end of this cougar is a bit loose after many miles and it tends to wear the inside edge of the front tires, even though it's aligned to spec. I"m guessing it toes out when I am on the brakes.
But, I'm a car guy, changing a flat tire does not tax my mechanical abilities. I have an air compressor in my own garage so adding air if needed is easy. My tire guy is only about 8 miles from my house, he stands behind what he sells. I drive almost exclusively on rural "blue" roads by choice, so a tire failure is not likely to put me into a collision course. Most of my preferred routes, you would have to make an appointment to have someone to crash into, other than maybe a cow or horse.
