I remember when the news was showing how static electricity could set off the fumes, gas stations began putting in grounding grids at the pumps, now there all gone. it can happen but it's rare.
I have not turned my engine off while pumping gas in 40 years and never will.
Very interesting, Desertsun
With all due respect, there is only one way to address someone NOT killing their engine while pumping gas . . . THE EMERGENCY SHUT-OFF SWITCH.
Believe me, I have punched that switch more than once, especially after witnessing that gas station explosion a few years ago. On a couple of occasions the police were summoned and one time the clown was arrested right on the spot.

Kinda hard to believe. You saw some one pumping gas with their engine running and you ran over to hit the big red emergency button? In this city full of crazies I would think there would be a lot of fists shaking towards you.
I would bet the store owners would call the cops on you. Not that they would ever come mind you. They dont respond to much of anything around here.
Dont be so afraid. Like I said, the modern pumps have that vapor recirculation boot. If it is missing or damaged then tell the station owner.
Besides, I just looked it up. As of 2002 there were only 150 reported cases of gas station fires blamed on static electricity. If you take that number and think about how many times each day in the world when people are filling their car.......well I also have an exceptional chance at hitting the Lotto tonight too. It is up to $25 mill tonight.

You are still breaking the law. If you don't like it, get the law changed. I like the idea of punching the red button.

I'm not afraid, desertsun . . . I just prefer to use common sense whenever in doubt.
You are absolutely correct, the odds are probably very low but why push your luck? If only ONE case was reported last year I would prefer not to be involved.
Also, what about the auto theft angle?
Bottom line . . . the engine is off and the keys are in my pocket while I gas up.
By leaving your car on, you do not put unnecessary stress on your starter re-starting your car so often.
Any Mechanic will tell you that the emmissions on initial start up are high compared to allowing it to just idle.
I also say if all those people were pumping their own gas and some nut case ran up and shut off the main switch, you would have a lot of angry bas pumpers. You know they would not understand why you did it. You know you would not walk up to each of them and explain why you did it. You know they all would like to do bodily harm to you for making them put their gas card back in and start over.
Oh and how do us peons change silly useless laws in this police state/society? Ain't gona happen.

Oh please, in my 50 years of driving I have only had to replace 2 starters on older vehicles.
Not if the engine is warm.
So what you are saying is you don't mind breaking the law and endangering human lives and property.
Don't know until you try. I worked on and got a law recinded in CA.
