Looking to spend $4000-6000. Obviously used. I've been looking and reading about VW's passat. Seem to be a bit nicer than Japanese and domestic equivalents. Any issues I need to look for with them or jettas? Any other suggestions on some other models I should be looking. I also like Mazda 3's and 6's.

What year models are you looking at, at this price point? In general newer VW cars have not been as reliable as similar Japanese models.

What do you want the car to do? Do you generally drive alone, one passenger, more? Do you want a hatchback for the truck-like utility?

Do you want 2 or 4 doors?

For less money, if you can find a 2nd generation Camry, particularly one with the 2L 3S-FE engine, they are sort of plain Jane, but a very reliable and long-lived car. Probably $2500 would buy you the best one in Texas.

A couple 2006 passats and one 2007 (with a manual tranny, which is what I'd prefer in a four cylinder). Each equipped with a 2.0 turbocharged four cylinder. Wanting four doors. Have thought about Rav4's and CRV's too. I'll be in the market for a replacement truck within the next six months, but will likely be keeping my economy car as my daily driver to and from work, so I kinda want something that is fun to drive. A miata just isn't practical enough, however.

also if you want another truck 2004-2008 F150 Can be had for in your price range pretty easily these days and with the SOHC 24-valve 4.6 they are pretty solid vehicles.

Trust me once you buy an economy car after owning a truck you end up finding out just how useful and versatile having a PU truck was and lots of people end either trading their economy car in for a truck or buying a truck as 2nd vehicle to their Daily driver economy cars.

Just wrecked my 2002 with the 4.6
It was fairly gutless by today's standards, but was very reliable. Bought it used in 2007 with 60k and it's life ended today with 210k. Got decent mileage out of it too. 16-18 mpg highway depending on wind and at what speed I set the cruise control.

The Protege did not "slot between" the 3 and the 6. The the Protege was the predecessor of the 3 and was smaller than the 3.

Ford Focus around the 2004 year mark. Try to find a 2.3L Duratech with the manual transmission.

VWs are insanely expensive to fix....
Parts for those cars are, as well
