Here: 13 yr old BMW X5, 12 yr old C5 Vette Vert, a 4 1/2 yr old Hyundai Tucson,
and a '94 Goldwing Aspendcade, an '87 Honda Hurricane 1000, and my '75 HD Shovelhead...

Older stuff, all purchased new, but they all run like tops.
In RetiredBumDom, new cars are a PIA hit to the nest egg.

Yes to trucks...wish I had one about 6 times a year.

We keep our vehicles until they can no longer be repaired at a price that is cost effective or if something dramatic happens and the motor blows up or something like that.
We currently have a 1993 Ford F150, a 1995 Chevy Suburban and a 2004 Chevy Suburban, all 3 were purchased for cash and used but maintained by the previous owners perfectly and we do the same.
We do not anticipate having to replace a vehicle again.

Toyotas. I have a 2003 Tacoma. In 5 years, I will probably still have a 2003 Tacoma. It runs great, always has. It's comfortable and easy to use. If I didn't have it, I don't think I'd even be buying a truck. I got it for a business I had several years back where I needed to move equipment. I didn't feel like selling it after I moved across the country and changed careers.

Basically, name a car or truck and there is someone somewhere who has one, maybe two or three. That's the great thing about vehicles, there is something for everybody. I keep all my vehicles a long time, my newest is 10 years old, the oldest is 29.

Classics and antiques aside, I have a 2003 (don't laugh) Hyundai. I just retired in January of this year, and commuted 50 miles a day before and since I purchased the car, plus 165 miles every weekend from April 1st through the end of October for many years, and I'm still happy with this car. I'm sure no one else would dare reply saying they have a Hyundai. But I'd buy another one. I guess I'm in the 'thinking about it now" stage at this point. I'm retired and on SS and pension. I probably could buy a new one outright, but I think I prefer to make a down payment, and get the monthly payments as low as possible so that what money I have is earning interest. I'm pretty sure I'll be buying another Hyundai. So don't knock it 'til you've tried it... it's a good car.

We only drive old BMWs. This is because my husband is a BMW mechanic and every so often, someone comes along and decides that it's not worth their while to pay for a head gasket or whatever major repair is needed, and sells it to him very cheap. Then he fixes it up and we keep it. We would not do this with any other make of car; it's just because of his particular situation.

Right now we have a two 2001s and a 2003. Will keep them as long as they keep running in reasonable condition, which could be quite a while. We just got rid of our 1991 3-series this year. We would definitely still have our 1988 M5 but it was totaled while parked by the side of the road, by someone talking on her cell phone.

Trucks for sure including Jeeps which I have experience holding onto for a long time. There's one commonality seen in nearly every situation where I have met/have known someone to keep any vehicle a very long time... they do their own mechanical issue diagnosis and work.

The exceptions are very rare, but I have also known more than one older widow who rarely drove yet had garaged vehicles in excess of 15 years old that ran perfectly that they had inspected/worked on once a year for registration purposes.
