Hello, I was having some loud helicopter like noises coming from my 2007 Ford Fusion Fusion. I took it in to the shop and they said it is the carrier bearing on my passenger half axle. The repair will be almost $400 ($150 in parts, rest in labor).

This seams high for a bearing. I have looked through tons of parts catalogs online and I can't even find the carrier bearing assembly to price it out. Any experienced mechanics out there that can tell me how long this would even take to replace, they are making it sound like a three hours job, once again sounds high.

Any mechanically inclined people out there want to give some advice?

I'm assuming its a FWD and not one of the 2007.5 AWD, correct? The axle shaft bearing is $12-30 depending on where it is ordered from. If it is the Wheel bearing you are talking $35-100 depending on which one you buy.

The wheel bearing is a 1 hour job by any competent mechanic. The axle bearing is a little more involved and can take a couple hours. If it's the axle bearing $400 for the job sounds reasonable

There is a bearing in the steering knuckle. I haven't changed one on a Fusion (I owned a 2007) but I'm thinking 2-3 hours sounds right (for an experienced mechanic). This link is not from a Fusion but scroll through and get an idea of what's involved. Protege Front Wheel Bearing Service - LOTS OF PICS

It is FWD, when I search for the issue all I see is the bearing/DRive Shaft issue on the AWD... Do you know where I can find an axle shaft bearing for $12-30?

front CV axle:

front wheel bearing is #2:

Can you get the Ford part number from your technician? I don't see any serviceable bearings on the axle shaft. A carrier bearing is commonly found in a differential assembly o a jointed driveshaft.

I think he said it was on the intermediate shaft where it connects into the transmission. Again I am only repeating, I am not sure. Apparently there is a carrier bearing assembly on the passenger side of the car only.

The left side of the boxed in portion of the first diagram CCC posted is the carrier assembly. It is only on one side because typically the transmissions in FWD configurations are offset or biased to one side of the vehicle. Because of that offset there is a need for a longer "half" shaft on one side. To keep things in proper alignment during torquing a carrier bearing is used midway for stabilization. In the figure you can see that on the left side of the box: there is a carrier bearing housing and a bearing directly to the right of it.

Depending on the location of this assembly they may have to remove quite a bit of equipment to get to it, or even possibly have to deal with maneuvering the engine cradle. I would get another estimate, but it doesn't seem too out of line if any of the aforementioned is true.

Lux, would that mean that the bearing is just inside the case of the transmission? If so, the estimate sounds fair and the tech seems quite competent IMO; most would blow it off to a tranny shop or a dealer.

IDK, I'm just a lube tech myself, I can do tune ups and tire rotations but not hang my own brakes type of thing, that's DH the master tech's kind of stuff.

We re all still guessing.
Stop making us guess, tell us more in details, is that parts and labor
Or is that parts labor and an alignment.

OP need to get a specific part and location for any of us to help.
If you can't get a specific part name. Tell your mechanic to take you to the car, and point to the part and put your hand on it.

If I have to guess from the described noise.
Press 1 2 and 3.
1 hub
2 bearing
3 spindle

Let me throw out some guesstimate numbers
Estimate part 50 bucks
Labor time (guessing) 2.5 hours @ 70 per hour= 175
Plus an alignment 60
Misc shop supplies 20
Tax 25
330 roughly
This all depends on where you live and the shops you find.
