I'm always interested at how many people will let appearance override any other factor when paying a 5-figure or 6-figure price for a car. I understand that it has to meet a certain minimum standard in order to be marketable, because no one wants a car that makes passersby spontaneously gag, but people just get too wound up in it. You can't have sex with your car (I repeat, no you can't), it can't respond back to your flattery, and probably no one is going to be impressed after you take the dealer tags off, either. And for that matter, you can't see it when you're driving - you know, when you're actually using it as intended.

Think that a car is beautiful to look at, you'll get more enjoyment out of buying a scale model and keeping it on your desk. Then you won't have to put up with expensive mechanics, back pain, and insane insurance bills because you wanted a car with "passion" even though it is completely impractical. No?

Being beautiful doesn't mean a car isn't reliable or efficient... You have to look at your car every day so why not have a beautiful one? Following your logic, why take care of your house? Why not just let the weeds grow?

This post pretty much says that the only vehicles you've ever driven in your life have been boring, toaster like automobiles that are only good for getting you from A to B. Probably beige, toaster-like automobiles, too. Nothing too flashy.

Then there are those of us who appreciate the craftsmanship an automobile can have. A car like a 60's Jaguar E-Type, or 60's Ferrari California are iconic. They've been remembered and sought after for 50+ years, long after any Honda/Toyota/GM/Ford econobox has rusted out in a junkyard somewhere.

I'm sure you're passionate about SOMETHING in your life, right? Have a taste for fine wine? Or appreciate a good cigar? Or you collect special editions of something, guns, pens, figurines... who knows.

People who are passionate about cars are the same as people who are passionate about anything else.

I appreciate art for the sake of art. However, in such cases, you are not paying for reliable transportation.. you're paying for art because of the emotional response. Very few people are in that kind of position and many people end up getting gulled by a good-looking car that doesn't meet their needs.

Who says a good looking car can't be reliable? Mine is, and still satisfies that "emotional response" that I want.

And as far as people buying something flashy that doesn't ultimately meet their needs... That's not an issue with the cars, that's an issue with self control and responsibility.

Why do you care what others think and buy for cars?
