She was clocked on radar, doing 85 in a 40 mph zone in Hamilton Ontario. Age 78.
She had her car impounded, her DL suspended for 7 days, and if she is convicted in court, her fine will be a minimum of $2000, up to a maximum of $10,000, at the discretion of the Judge.
That is the wording for that offence in the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. It covers a number of driving infractions, including racing, driving at a speed that is double the posted speed limit ( that is what she was doing) and trying to evade Police by speeding.
We also have a section of the HTA that forbids the installation of a NO 2 system in a street driven car. Or being in possession of a radar or ladar detector. That one brings an immediate seizure and a $500 fine. The nitrox oxide fine is $2,000, and confiscation of the equipment, to be destroyed upon conviction.
I'm 73 and drive 85 all the time. In southern Calif. if your in the left lane on the freeway and doing less than 80 your a danger to all. The Highway Patrol knows this and as long as everyone is going the same speed and not weaving around they will pass you when your in a group doing 80.
Ontario is an oppressive place. The only thing that makes it worth visiting is Bruce Peninsula, otherwise just stay away. The rest of the provinces despise it and steer clear, worse than Alberta.
Hamilton, hmmmmm was she on the Queen E or on a surface street like Beach Rd, Burlington Rd or Barton St/
With the city traffic kinda wondering about the 80 part.
