A lot of risks are out there on the highways. one of which is speeding, yourself, and the other is drivers speeding around you. I think the greatest lesson to take from this, and should help with merging onto highways as well, is to match the flow of traffic. Don't pull into a lane to blow around people, or cause people to blow around you. If everyone is doing 55, there's a reason. If everyone is doing 90, and that's just too fast for you, move waaaay to the right, let it move on past, and be on your way.

The rules around road etiquette just don't seem to make any sense for a whole lot of the drivers on the road.

But no, they just decided to stay in the left lane. I hate passing on the right, but along with several others, I did it. I noticed in my rear view mirror that they exited off the interstate several miles later. They exited at the last second as they cut someone off as they quickly swung into the right lane. For some reason, that type of driving behavior is common on that stretch of highway.
This is why, if I were a cop and this were actually illegal in my jurisdiction, it would be right at the top of my no-warning-straight-to-ticket list (right next to failure to dim high beams). The only way to get through to this level self-assured righteous indignation is to be told you're not only wrong, but dangerous - both in your pocketbook and at every level of authority you appeal to.
