The new chevy cruze is supposed to be a really nice compact but idk about it's reliability. The mazda will likely be more fun to drive fwiw, and I would expect it to have few major issues long term. I would give the edge to the mazda but they're both good choices.

I'm a whopping 5 feet 6 and dislike sloping roof lines as well. I think they are the present and future. Not feeling slopping roof lines or windshields. Makes me feel claustophic. Thats why I drive a Nissan Cube which is a mini studio on wheels.
Mechanically the Mazda 3 is just fine. However, what a rust bucket! Never again. It is the only vehicle I have had were the rear bumper literally fell off due to rust. Oh, it also was an 2005.
In all fairness to Mazda, they were essentially a completely different company at that point (Ford Lite).
But the Fords (and Toyota, Honda, GM etc.) of that era are still just fine. Mazda some how found the worst steel to use. I swore never again.
Or, you just got a bad car. It happens.
