Wrong! Chevy Cruze is based upon the Opel Astra, Germany.

The new chevy cruze is supposed to be a really nice compact but idk about it's reliability. The mazda will likely be more fun to drive fwiw, and I would expect it to have few major issues long term. I would give the edge to the mazda but they're both good choices.

I'm a whopping 5 feet 6 and dislike sloping roof lines as well. I think they are the present and future. Not feeling slopping roof lines or windshields. Makes me feel claustophic. Thats why I drive a Nissan Cube which is a mini studio on wheels.

OP, are you considering the second generation Cruze or the first one? I would say to go with whichever one has the interior features you like best. And I would do Google searches about each cars' reliability. See also this Car and Driver magazine head to head review of the Cruze and Mazda 3, along with reviews of three other competitors: 2016 Chevrolet Cruze vs. 2016 Honda Civic, 2017 Hyundai Elantra, 2016 Mazda 3, 2016 Nissan Sentra – Comparison Test – Car and Driver

The Mazda was number one and the Cruze earned third place. Good luck.

In all fairness to Mazda, they were essentially a completely different company at that point (Ford Lite).

But the Fords (and Toyota, Honda, GM etc.) of that era are still just fine. Mazda some how found the worst steel to use. I swore never again.

I'd go for Chevy with diesel (45 mpg) - this is an European model, tested and true.

For 2017 they will also have the hatch available, my preference...
