There is a 2010 Cobalt listed nearby with 40K miles for 9K
A 2011 Cruze with the same number of miles is listed for 12K
I realize the Cruze is one year newer but the mileage is the same. Is the Cruze that much better that it is worth paying a 3K premium? A friend who is a mechanic told me that the Cobalts are junk but I wasn't so sure about that.
Whether a Cruze is worth that much more is up to you. I find it is a significant leap in fit and finish and general build quality over the Cobalt. I cannot speak to mechanical reliability really, but would not expect one to be significantly better or worse than the other.
Not enough data on the Cruze but from past experiences tells me that GM doesn't take internal testing very seriously and even evidence suggesting that they didn't perform necessary recalls until it was too late.

I agree that the Cruze has a better look. I'm mainly looking for something to get from point A to point B since I do a lot of driving
I purchased a 2008 cobalt in December of 2007. It now has 37K miles on it and it has been trouble free. I only have two complaints. One is I ordered it with every option available only to discover after I took delivery that there is no power seat option available. That was my fault, not the cars. It's not earth shattering, but it's a PITA to have to pump up the seat when wife drives, and pump down the seat when I drive. To raise or lower the seat, there is a handle you must pump..
The other problem with the car is the ambient air temp gauge is not accurate. Some times it works, some times it doesn't. It will continue to show the garage temperature all day long. Every time I have taken it to the dealer for service I mention it, but so far nothing has been done to correct it. Not knowing the exact outside temperature hasn't had much effect on my life, so I don't worry about it much..
