And you are correct. Where I live at we have electrical outlets at the parking lots at work for us to plug our vehicles. The motors are winterized (block heater, battery blanket or a trickle charger, oil pan heater, and antifreeze mixed around 60/40% distilled water). About 15-20 minutes before leaving work, we start the motors using the remotes, and just when walking out of work we remove the ice or snow from the windshield.

At -30 degrees, a cold motor would take around 15 minutes of driving the car at 55MPH for some warm air to defrost the windshield inside the car, but not sufficient time to warm the cab.

If the car is 20 years old, warm it up. newer cars don't need that. (Advice from an old car mech) Thing is, when your windows are covered in ice, I usually tend to start my vehicle and scrap the windows while it warms up....

In the really cold climates you don't really care about using extra gas. What you want is a car that warms the inside fairly quickly. so letting the engine and transmission warm up a bit means that the air is warmer and you don't have to drive for 15 minutes in a freezing car first.

my bmw manual mentioned something about never warming up the car because it has some sort of heater thing for the engine.

There are many that say this.

I say it's the same as tipping: An optional, feel-good, waste.
