My 1st car was a used Maxima. It had all sorts of issues. How is the quality of recent Maxima's?

The only source of information I know on used car repair history that's detailed, and truly credible is from the Consumers Reports magazine. Check their website.

Skip any Nissan that has a CVT transmission.
Most/all Toyota are regular automatic transmission with gears.

OP, go to any large Nissan Maxima forum. CD is not really one. Ask no questions. Simply read through pages of what owners complain about.
Per comparison, you could go, for example, to toyotanation Camry or Avalon forum. Do simple count. How many posts with issues in the last say week. Issues.

Then, go to NM forum and count them there. Reliable cars with no issues tend to have little to none. Like Highlander hybrid. It's basically dead forum, they are so reliable.

Simple.

Eh...I would stay away from brand enthusiast forums for the most unbiased average consumer reviews. Enthusists tend to often view things thru rose colored glasses so just keep that in mind.

I would personally start by determining what generation Max you are interested in and doing a search with that specific generation and CVT issues. Nissans biggest problem by far seem to be their CVTs so start there and good luck.

Only three posts before the obligatory CVT bashing by someone who probably has never set foot in a car with CVT.

Read up on the Nissan CVT.
Nissan had to provide an extended warranty for the CVT. Too many failures.

" you’ll find a number of common issues with CVTs. These include overheating, slipping, jerking, shuddering and a sudden loss of acceleration. As with any transmission, there are some cases where a CVT has failed altogether. The CVT belt, in particular, can be subject to excessive wear and stretching. In some extreme cases, owners filed lawsuits against automakers because of poor and unreliable CVT performance."

They have gotten only worse with the CVT issues as well as the ugly grill I would Avoid the Maxima and look for a Toyota Avalon (Non hybrid as the hybrid uses a CVT), Dodge Charger, (V6 no V8) Chrysler 300 (V6 No V8) or Chevrolet Impala (V6 no 4 cylinder)

This link does nothing to back your claim. In fact, it does the opposite. The most damning statement is this

"CVTs are not without mechanical problems, however. And as with conventional automatics, it can be expensive to repair or replace a CVT"

This is not exactly a calamity.
