They make these guards for Big Trucks, Pickups, and SUVs. Dead Deer, no damage to vehicle except washing off the blood. Without the guard and a regular vehicle, will be from thousands of dollars damage, to total the vehicle, and possible death to some of the people in the car.
They also greatly reduce the damage/no damage in an average accident of any type. Kind of rough on the other vehicle though, especially pedestrians that try to cross a street middle of the block in front of one of them. And middle of the block not a cross walk is the biggest pedestrian/vehicle collision problem.

That deer hit the side of the car, not the front end. I do not think a guard like you are describing would help.
Play the video back and hit pause. It does appear the buck got in front of the vehicle and either the tire blew, or the radiator blew. You have a good point though because many do just hit the side of the vehicle. I have hit 2 on different occasions and neither one got in front of my vehicle. In each case, they bounced off the side.
There was a wreck near Eglin AFB in FL many years ago, where car A hit a deer, which went airborne and crashed through the windshield of car B driving in the opposite direction, killed the driver and exited the back window. Lot of weight in those things.

Nothing blew it appears, what you're seeing is a reflection on the side of the car. Article said the car continued.
It's merciful that Bambi bought it, pretty instantly I'd say. In another discussion we talk about how wildlife die. Being smacked by a car is probably among the most merciful deaths a wild critter can experience.
And yes, people get hurt if the collision happens in an unfortunate way.
In New England we often heard of people being killed when they hit Bullwinkle. Long tall skinny legs, heavy artillery on Mr. Moosie's head, plus moosies weigh a bunch or even more sometimes. Do NOT hit a moose. He has a bad habit of joining the front passengers via windshield and smashed roof.
I live a few miles from there and don't think I've gone a day in the last 5 years without seeing multiple deer. Charlotte needs a hunting program before the deer take over. The fact that they've developed super-ninja skills is very concerning. I wonder if they are plotting a first strike for control of the city. The deer definitely have numbers on the humans.
