It looks really hard and unsafe to drive a manual. How do you know which gears to shift while driving and how do you make sure you shift correctly while keeping your eyes on the road and hands on steering wheel? It looks like driving manuals is hard work, do people actually enjoy driving a manual?

I do and I enjoy it. And I never have to look at the shifter to know what gear I'm using or when to shift.

That is why you have a tachometer.

Driving a manual is fun in the right situation like on a curvy mountain road. In bumper to bumper traffic, not so much.

Knowing when to shift and which gear is next just comes from experience. You could use the tachometer to know when to shift, but I pretty much go by sound. Plus, it all depends on how rapidly you want to accelerate. It doesn't take long at all to learn how to drive a manual, and much of the time it's a lot fun (for a sports car, for instance). It just becomes second nature after a while.

Chuck Norris will be dropping by to pick up your man card.

Driving manual is not hard at all, once you get used to it. An experienced driver working a manual is actually using a different area of the brain to control shifting, than a novice. Of course, yeah, you have to take one hand off the wheel for a moment to shift, but this is hardly a death-defying stunt.

Anything is hard to do, if you don't know how to do it. And if you do know, it becomes relatively easy.

It's been quite awhile, but I drove a 3-speed column shift, and one 4-speed and two 5-speed floor mounted shifts. When you're first getting the hang of it, it can be a little confusing and/or awkward, especially when you are starting off in traffic from a light or even worse, the same thing on a uphill slope. But you just need someone to get you started with some demonstration and encouragement and a little practice, it's not *that* bad. As far as what gear to shift to, with rare exception, I just ran them from first in order on the way up, so that's not a tough decision... downshifting can take a little more experience to do well, you have to have a good intuition for when it's needed and how far down is best for the speed you're going if you want it to be smooth and natural... but that just takes a little more experience.

Driving a manual easy and fun, i can drive any type of manual out there sure Miss the 3 on the tree. Today’s youth have no idea what they are missing. In a pickup you don’t use first gear unless you are hauling a heavy load or towing a trailer, first gear in a pickup or a larger stake truck is called a creeper gear.

You really don't even think about it.

Do you ever tie your shoes while talking to someone? Or type on the computer? You don't have to look, it's somewhat complex appearing on the surface, but muscle memory takes over.

It’s muscle and brain memory. You barely know you are shifting it just becomes such a natural and connective aspect about driving. Even in bumper to bumper SoCa traffic it is easy and natural as can be, rarely braking and sometimes rarely shifting, just keeping an eye on the traffic pace and gauging it with your machine.

As far as whether it's enjoyable, this depends on the quality of the clutch, shifter and transmission, and the traffic. It can be a lot of fun on open roads and in light traffic. It can be a nightmare in congestion and traffic jams.
