He was killed by a falling object during an earthquake, fercrysake. Are we going to require now that carjacks protect users from tsunamis or volcanic eruptions ?
'
Cinder blocks are not jackstands, and if they were placed vertically they can be very "tippy". Use proper jackstands. Now even proper ones might have tipped in a serious quake, but they would certainly have worked better than a cinder block. Very sad, and a horrible way to go.
I would think an Earthquake would be an extenuating circumstance with regards to a "properly" supported vehicle falling off the supports.
I would also argue that the vehicle is not really properly supported, but all I have to go on is a photo taken 30 feet away. Not really fair to pass judgement without more info.
Yeah, that set-up was sketchy at best. Working on a dirt road and yes, cinderblocks aren't all that structurally sturdy. On a paved flat surface, if a car was on jack stands and someone was planning to crawl underneath the car, we'd also use two stacked tires with steel rims to hold up the car.
If it was on jack stands, properly installed, there would be no story, as even with the earthquake, it would have stayed up.
Agreed, if you read the link it says nothing about jackstands, only jacks, and there is nothing proper about using dirt as a base for either. On a level paved surface with jackstands properly installed and locked in place the vehicle most likely would have remained supported.
Even putting jack stands on asphalt can be sketchy. I have the experience of putting a car on jack stands in the cool morning, and then find by midday, when the sun was really strong, the two stands on the side facing the sun had sunk into the asphalt about 1" or so.
After that, I welded a metal plate to the bottom of my stands for work on asphalt.
But as always, I always throw other objects under the car as well to "catch" it if it were to slip off the stands.
I'm 150 miles away and it was like my house was sitting on a bowl of jiggling jello.
