I am looking at a 2017 certified preowned XT5 with 47,000 miles. Warranty left would be about 48 months and 53,000 miles. The price would be $30,000 unless I can get it for less. Trade in on my traverse is about $15,000. My car is starting to give me problems. What do you guys think. I haven't bought a used car in probably 30 years.

I know that a Caddy wouldn’t be my first choice. Or my 10th.

What problems are you having with the Traverse? A buddy of mine had his lemon law buyback.

Problem is somewhere in the electrical. Sometimes when you turn the key, nothing happens. You have to turn is off and on a couple of times before it starts. Got it back from the shop today and they could not find anything. Problem needs to be constant. It is very sporadic.

Generally speaking, Cadillacs have terrible reliability. They're remarkably consistent too with the poor reliability- that's been true for 40 years- ever since they came out with that monumentally stupid 4100 V8. Lots of things have changed since then, but somehow Cadillac is able to not improve

They're about on par with Dodge/Chrysler.

Make sure any certification or extended warranty is backed by the carmaker (i.e. GM). Don't even bother with certification by dealer because that doesn't mean much.

It's sad that your Traverse has the same problem that my GM car had . . . BACK IN 2002! I've moved on to Toyota/Lexus and it's been the best decision I ever made, car-wise.

I had a 92 Camaro that did the same thing!!!! I told him in another thread to check the ignition switch but I doubt he followed up on that.

Nothing as in no lights on dash, or lights come on but won’t crank.....

Sometimes the anti theft won’t see the key. Try the other key.

Is the car recalled under the ignition switch?

Electrical problems suck. My wife’s Infiniti did that. It went in this weird anti theft mode nothing would come on. Ended up the key wasn’t being seen by the computer. Had a new key made and programmed. But it’s got 185,000 miles. Still runs great. We’re getting her a new car next year and I’ll take this as my commuter to the vanpool parking lot.

I don’t consider Caddy a reliable manufacturer as they age. I don’t even see them on my car buying radar

It depends on the particular model of course. An Escalade is basically a Chevy Tahoe... and similarly reliable. Well, except even more ill-conceived and poorly executed electronic bells & whistles are stacked onto it. More stuff to break.

Your Traverse has bad ignition lock. It's not that expensive to replace. Or, your key needs to re learned by the car, or new battery installed. GM BCM is known to be very finicky with keys.
Kaddies are well known for not being reliable vehicles with problematic engines.

If you want large cushy car, buy Town Car. Those are on the list of ten most reliable cars ever.

GM couldn't build an interior to save its own life until about 2014
