I bought a new (used) car today! a 2013 Honda CRV, I love the car, but the original owner had the door windows tinted , but its way too light for my taste, so I want to remove it and have 5% installed.

I have heard that they cannot install new tint over old tint, Im not sure if thats true or not though. I hope there is an easier way than just working at it with a razor blade!

Let whoever puts your tint on take the old off. Done.

They can put new tint over old tint as my friend does it for a living and is going to redo mine which he already has done. He said taking the old off is a pain. A pain he’s probably going to be doing with mine though.

this might be what your friend says but it is definitely NOT the industry standard!

Removal then new tint on the glass is the normal standard. The key to a good removal is getting all the glue off and they have a chemical that is a releasing agent for the glue. Let the tint shop do the removal.

Steamer is a good method. Lift a corner and start steaming and it peels right off. Tint shops have the equipment to remove the tint. If you are retinting the windows, have them also remove the old tint.

I also second not applying tint over tint. Remove, and reapply correct tint in the shade you want. Tint over tint can get very dark. When I was young I had buddies that loved doing 5% tint over 5% tint. Might as well paint the windows

^^^^ This is correct on both counts. I bought a steamer at WalMart to remove the old film on a car I restored for myself a while back. Took it right off, left some glue, but I think we used Windex to get that off, if I remember correctly.

Why anyone would put new over old film is beyond me.

Removing the old is the (most tedious, but) less stressful part.

Finding a guy who won't 2-piece your rear hatch, try to cut strips to fit between your defroster lines, or leave a 1/4" gap around your dot matrix is the stressful part.

3M Ceramic tint, always.
