So I'm thinking of getting a 2001-2003 Volkswagen Passat and I looked up the gas mileage, which is not bad at 23mpg combined since I don't drive much at all. However, it also stated it uses Premium Fuel. Is it necessary in this type of car? Or is it more necessary in newer, more powerful and upscale luxury and sports cars?
I don't own one but the compression ratio of the engine looks like it would call for Premium though dig around for the owners manual and see if Premium is required or recommended
No you may not use regular fuel. My friend has a 01 passat, he has tried to get away with regular fuel and it caused a shaky engine (pre-detonation). It will run on regular, but like crap and this does damage the engine.

Please. I need your help.
Interesting question, Jessemh
Most modern engines designed for premium fuel will run on Regular Gas but the efficiently and performance will be compromised to some extent depending on the particular engine.
Bottom line . . . if Premium is specified it is not worth the reduced efficiency and risk to the engine to save a couple of bucks . . . repairs are expensive.

Hmm...some quite varied responses here. I'll have to do some more research or ask my mechanic.
Which engine does this car have? The 1.8T or the V6? If it is the 1.8T you would be wise to run the required high octane fuel. This is a finicky engine; running it on low octane is kind of like getting drunk on cheap booze and going to work with a bad hangover. Sure it saves you a couple bucks (as in a dollar or two, sheesh you cheapskate), and you can go through the routine motions allright, but sooner or later the boss is gonna get on your case, something is going to slip and then you have the oh sh-it moment. And then you're gonna pay.
Don't be a cheapskate. Do what the manufacturer tells you to. It is literally $2.40 on a 12 gallon fillup. Most people I know waste more than that on junk food inside the gas station.
The 1.8T so I guess I won't get it since gas is a lot more here than in Appleton, WI. LOL.
Also, I'm a teenager, so every dollar saved is worth it.
