Stop texting.
Throw the coffee out the window.
Drop the hair comb.
SCREAM.
Then call the insurance guy.

Sure there is... I carry all sorts of stuff in the trunk of my winter beater... including a 30ft tow strap. If I was in that situation and my car was not moving to fast I would have lashed it to a lamp post or something.

At least with my big old Dodge, I'd mess up all the cars around me alot more than they'd do to me!

Driving on ice without any other cars is a skill. Bouncing of a bunch of bozos is a pinball game.

I always take both cars out to the unplowed and empty park & ride lot after the first snow. I slide both cars ato reawaken my reflexes after a high traction summer. Eventually I establish what amounts to an auto-X track and try to "improve" my times until I am continously sideways in the Subie.

Hint - When you do suspect ice hit the brakes to check traction. Just tap them and get off them so you can feel the traction available. I suggest putting the coffee down before you do this.

Wrong! This video shows exactly why you don't use your brakes on ice. Low gear, or gas, and at least control the vehicle. Once you lock up your brakes you're just along for the ride.

Some people need to read the OP again...Its NOT, NOT NOT to do on ice. PLEASE READ again. I learned how to drive on ice and snow with a stick shift when I was 12 yrs old in Canada over 60 + yrs ago and putting ON the brakes LOCKS the wheels. Steve

Well specifically what happens when the wheel is locked is snow, ice, water, builds up in the tread as the tire stops moving and you get a flat surface across the contact patch enhancing the loss of friction.

There is a way to come to a stop on ice without ABS with your brakes. That technique is taught by a particular performance school.

The tires are everything. The more grip you have the better. VDC, ABS and EBA can all help amateurs, but it's the tires you have that meet the road, so the more grip you have from proper tires the better. I always encourage people to get the best tire possible.

lol, some ice you will slide on nomatter what.

So you can get into your trunk and anchor the tow strap from the pole to the car all while the vehicle is sliding on ice??? In reality the car is moving alot faster ( even when it looks slow) compared to you on foot, not to mention you scrambling back to your trunk while slipping. Even if you happen lash it to a lamp post, that would only swing you around in another direction or into one of those parked cars. Your car will probably end up hitting something before you even reach your trunk for your towstrap. Your best bet would to not even drive that day.

Of course I wouldn't be able to do that while its moving but if I was able to get the vehicle to stop at any point I would do that right away. If I could prevent my car from being a pinball of destruction then I certainly would.

I don't know where your from but around here there is no kind of weather that phases us.
