My first car was a '79 Buick Park Avenue (or was it Electra?); my mom gave it to me or at least let me drive it (no title transfer) in 2004. That didn't work out too well, so my dad bought me a '96 Park Avenue in January 2005 for about $2,800 + $400 tire job. I totalled the newer Park Avenue in a December 2006 crash, and the next month bought a '00 Chevy Malibu for about $5,100 from a small used car lot ($5,700 after taxes). Next time I buy a vehicle I don't want to spend too much more.

My wife's CRV, I think it was $22,000 out the door. Previously, my 1992 4Runner which I bought in 1994 for 19,500 out the door. Still have that one.

Loaded PT Cruiser GT. More than I should have. 24grand. But that was still 5grand off sticker in '05.
btw....great car, kick to drive with the turbo and 220 horses. Wish I'd gotten a SRT4 though. And I'm middle aged.

I paid the most for my Ford Ranger pickup truck, at $22,000 (in 1996). It's the best, most reliable vehicle I have ever owned and it is still my daily driver. Right now, that puts it at a basic cost of about $32/week, and getting lower all the time. Never had any major repairs, and it's never broken down either. It still gets the same gas mileage it did when new, even though I have a quarter of a million miles plus on it now.

I paid about $46k (with tax and the maintenance agreement). I always said I would never pay more than the cost of my dad's house in 1980 ($42,800). If you subtract the tax and maint. agreement, I still kept that promise.

If you factor in that my father in law gave us 4 of our last 6 cars (prior to this purchase), I am still doing ok.

1976 Grand Prix-5300 new, would be around 20K now
1979 Grand Prix-7500 new, would be around 23K now

I was just curious and adjusted for inflation

How much WOULD you pay for a car?

If money was no object - or at least not a driving factor (no pun intended!) - how much would you be willing to pay for a car?

Is there a point at which the additional costs stops being worth it? Is a $200k Maybach really 3 times better then a loaded $75k S class or 7 Series?

My current cars, both purchased 1 year used, were $23k & $28k. Personally I would'nt pay more then $35k for a car in my present circumstances. If I hit the Lotto tommorow, I don't think I could justify to myself spending more then $70k on a car. After that point, IMO, you are not getting alot more car, just more show.

In 2007, I paid $10,500 for my old 2000 Toyota Tundra SR5 V8 truck. Sold a year later for $10,500.
