My old man used to say if they made the speed limit 1000mph there would be some maniac who would drive 1010mph. Obviously not but you get the point. It doesn't matter how high you make it....somebody will always try to exceed it to get from A to B faster.
For the most part where I've lived there has been some sense in the posted speed limit. It'll always be within 10mph of what I percieve to be a reasonable speed for a given stretch of road. The exeption may be the 820 loop around Fort Worth. If you drove the speed limit you'd get ran over.
You are totally wrong here. I drive a base model 1991 Ford Escort with 13 inch wheels. The lowest speed rated tires available are s rated which means 112 mph. I only mention my car because it is one of the slowest cars on the road, with the smallest tires available. Minivans and pickup tires are going to be rated over 120 mph.
"Remember that the speeds listed are test speeds and not recommended speeds. Speed ratings apply only to the tire itself, and not to a particular vehicle. Putting a tire rated for a certain speed on a vehicle does not mean that the vehicle can be safely operated at the tire's rated speed."
sorry, you try to do 100 in an Escort you are an idiot. Certain cars were not designed to go over certain speeds.

You don't really expect good automotive advice from a self avowed drunk that drives an Escort, do ya?

There will always be someone pushing the threshold, true. I tend to be one of those, at least for long-distance drives, and providing conditions allow. But the overall point is the more reasonable the speed limit, the higher the compliance rate, and the lower the magnitude of violation for those who will continue to violate.

You just don't get it. My car came stock with s rated tires. I drive it back and forth to Phoenix Arizona all the time. I have driven it over 100mph continuously with no problems multiple times. You said, and I quote....
"Most passenger/truck tires are rated for 85mph which means don't drive over 85mph for too long or otherwise you risk a blowout."
Now, you want to call me an idiot when you do not even know what you are talking about? There is not even one passenger tire made today that is rated under 100mph. Get your facts straight before you make a fool of yourself again.
