Why is the Chevette on the list? Granted, I never thought highly of the car, but at the time I didn't label it as "ugly". I just thought it was cheap and junky.
I dont know either.... it was not an ugly car... I feel it was well in line with other cars of the era... that was like Pinto.... it was on that list, but was not really an ugly car. They are confusing ugly with inferior.
yup. Its hard to call one of the best selling cars in the US ugly, like the Sable. The 90s Taurus is ugly though.
Yeah... while not a show stopper, I thought that when the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable came out in late 1985, that they were very attractive cars... pace setters really. Taurus more than Sable... Taurus has always looked nicer than Sable imo.

I remember driving across the Arizona desert in the middle of summer in a Chevette (no AC) when I was a kid. THAT was ugly.
What was up with the name too? Did Chevy think people would confuse it with "corvette" and accidently buy one?
One of the links you can go to from this site is called "The Best of the Tokyo Auto Show". Any of the cars in that site would have fit perfectly into the 50 Ugliest list.
I hate these stupid magazine puff pieces. A handful of the cars were needlessly ugly. The rest were just cars, including some in which the designer was trying to accomplish a balance of utility and fashion, or go for straight utility---which is not in itself a bad thing.
The list starts with the El Camino, so it automatically lost credibility
