I was fortunate to also have a V-8 American car as a first car.
A 1966 Dodge Dart GT with 273 V-8. With console and bucket seats. 109,000 miles when I got it and I ran it up to 235,000 miles.
Being a gear head I did some basic mods... a Carter AFB 500 cfm carb replacing the stock 2-bbl, Holley aluminum intake manifold, dual exhausts, shift kit for the auto transmission and electronic ignition. Also, a lower axle ratio; 3.23s instead of the original 2.93s.

My first car was a 1950 Ford 4 dr sedan with a flathead V8 and 3 speed overdrive manual transmission. I paid $50 for it in 1962 and drove it all thought high school.

1990 Honda Accord. Loved it. Had about 290K on it with no engine or transmission problems. It's probably still somewhere running strong.
