Japan AirLine and Boeing have been joined at the hip forever. Now, for the first time, in a huge deal, JAL is buying Airbus instead of Boeing. The seismic shocks in Seattle must have been huge.

This is a setback for Boeing. Airlines around the world were taken on a ride due to delays on Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes. Not only that, negative publicity on all the technical glitches on the new plane has hit consumer confidence on new Boeing Planes. Boeing Company is reluctant to give compensation for delays and technical problems-what message it gives to other airlines. They will find another manufacturer.
How I wish that we had other airline manufacturers also besides Boeing. Orders not going to Boeing should have gone to McDonnell Douglas. This conservative idea (Reagan Economics) of not enforcing Sherman Act has started to hit us now.

It's not that simple really.

The A350-900 is around the size of the 787-10, but has a range of 8100nmi vs the 7000mni on the 787 -- a significant difference when you are carrying cargo.

Furthermore, the A350-1000 is similar size to the 777-8x, but will be available much sooner and has an 100,000lb advantage on MTOW for cheaper operation/landing fees as it is a slighter plane overall.

Then you have the common type rating, along with ease for spare parts etc.
