1961 crash in Belgium that killed the entire US figure skating team that was on its way to the World Championships. All of the anticipated up-and-comers for the 1964 Olympics were on that plane, plus judges and coaches.
Affected US Figure Skating for decades. Also, the World Championships were cancelled that year ... how could one even consider holding it after something so tragic.

They wouldn't. Remember they kept the Olympics running after the 1972 massacre of the Israeli team. But maybe that's because they were Jooooooooos.
I entered that search term in the Search This Thread field and got goose eggs! Search function suck! But I'd say Tenirife too, followed by 9/11 attacks.
Given the aura of secrecy around that time, I think the cause is suspicious. My two votes are an errant U.S. missile or a non-errant Arab missile.
Those are possibilities. A random 747 captain does not know more than others do what caused it. I do recall a 747 crash in Asia, from higher up, that 800 reminds me of. That one was blamed on corrosion, I think. I'll have to search for it to refresh my memory.
