Cripes, daughters on plane but a 40 minute delay as captain hasn't arrived yet..wth????
Delays in operations tend to spread through the system in a ripple effect. Pilots usually fly more than one flight a day. Your daughter's pilot may be currently flying another plane whose takeoff was delayed. Alternatively, the original pilot may have become incapacitated, and a replacement pilot had to be found on short notice and hasn't made it to the airport yet.

Such was the case, the original Captain had an emergency and they had to wait for replacement. Guess I forgot these things do happen, she is in first class so should be comfortable waiting. Flight was totally booked so no way United was going to cancel it.
They all got free tv..lol
I remember years ago flying Tower Air on New Year's Eve. The flight was scheduled close to midnight out of JFK Airport and was delayed because the pilots got stuck in traffic getting to the airport from Manhattan.

Airlines do cancel totally booked flight, but they try hard not to need to do that (for obvious reasons). But if they can't get a flight crew that's legal to fly, or if the plane has serious mechanical issues and a replacement isn't immediately available, the airline has no other choice but to cancel the flight.
Really, when you think about how complicated an airline transportation network actually is, and how easily it can be disrupted by events such as weather, it's a wonder anyone every gets to their final destination on time!
people have no idea what goes into making an airline schedule and like somebody said its a miracle anybody gets anywhere at all. The airline I worked operations at had two 747 freighters that circled the globe 24/7.......one going south around the planet and one going north........and it worked 95% of the time perfectly......made 6 or 7 stops each way......100 tons on and off at most stops........snow ice thunderstorms those 747's were always on the go.......and that was just a tiny .0001% of the operation
