The bar scene in Mt. Vernon is definitely more subdued and more spread out than Fells Point or Federal Hill, but there are a few fun spots.

Midtown Yacht Club is now
Midtown BBQ and Brew . I haven't been there since the name change, but the Yacht Club was always one of my favorites. Mick O'Sheas is another nice bar, and there's a sports bar closer to Penn Station called Turp's that seems to usually attract a nice crowd. Brewer's Art has been rated one of the best bars in the country (

There are also a number of clubs/lounges in the area (Red Maple, Dionysius, the Hippo), but that's not my scene.
A cab to Federal Hill would probably cost between $5-$7. You could also take the Purple Line of the circulator if it's early enough in the evening, or take the #64 bus. A cab to Fells Point would likely cost a little more due to traffic downtown.
