It's not a bad area at all. That neighborhood is pretty much gentrified. The guy who was shot was a close friend's roommate and best friend. They lived in that house less than a month.

One thing I have noticed about B'more in my short time in the city is it has a chip on its shoulder the size of Texas. Why run your city down so much? There's a lot of great stuff here. Baltimore is a uniquely American city; embrace that. Who cares how good the good neighborhoods are in Chicago, Miami, NYC, where ever. It doesn't matter if you live HERE. A whole bunch of cities in Michigan would love to have what Baltimore has. The city has a self-esteem problem and it makes the city, collectively, sort of neurotic. If you had a friend who spent all their time talking about they aren't as good as (insert random person), you'd tell them to get their head examined. Baltimore has an ease and a comfort and a sense of humor and a welcomingness all its own. Enjoy that.
THANK YOU!! I've only been here almost 2 years and I've been saying that on these boards for months! People around here are a bunch of Eyeores. LOL. They're nuts.

I grew up in Chicago and now live in Baltimore, and it's the same deal: the vast majority of the crime is in bad neighborhoods, and the nice neighborhoods are mostly fine, but of course it's important to watch yourself in a city. Sucks if you're in a bad neighborhood, good if you're in a nice neighborhood. Just like anywhere else.

One thing Baltimore has going for it is that several of its nice neighborhoods are contiguous. You can go from Locust Point to Fed Hill to the Inner Harbor up to Mount Vernon, over to Harbor East, on to Little Italy, Fells, and Canton and it never gets sketchy. I thought it was pretty cool when I realized that.

Mount Vernon you can go to Bolton Hill and also into Charles Village. Going to Charles Village it can be sketchy at night but once in Charles Village you can go to Hampden and then all the way to Baltimore County.

Just got back from another trip to Baltimore. Saw some beautiful areas around Roland. One of the nicest city neighborhoods I've seen anywhere. Great city.

I visited the city recently too for the first time and couldn't agree more. I didn't see the neighborhood you mentioned, but I went to Ridgley's Delight, Little Italy, Fed Hill, Fells, and Mt. Vernon. I don't know if these are Baltimore's "nicest" neighborhoods, but with respect to architecture, activity, diversity, and social harmony they seemed a lot better than the nicest neighborhoods in Pittsburgh (Shadyside, South Side, Oakland, and Squirrel Hill). People seemed friendlier and more relaxed too. Very southern but also urban. I can't wait to go back.
