Good post..

"..Baltimore seems like a sister city to Philadelphia with many of the same characteristics. I definitely hear of Baltimore people being a bit tough as well. But for some reason, I associate as possibly a bit more laid-back or not as loud as the stereotypes of NY/NY/Phil..."

*There are some similar characters and feel, but that can be applied to various regions/cities. Some parts of Baltimore feel like East New York (Brooklyn), Queens and the Bronx, and southern New Jersey. Baltimore definitely has a laid back (too laid back), in my opinion.

The linguistics/language is somewhat different (especially amongst the African American population). I can differentiate Black linguistic and slang patterns between most of these groups. Fashion styles to a certain degree, musical choices, sports, knowledge of neighborhood historical figures (i.e. will smith and Philadelphia organized crime figures).

I guess basically I hear certain stereotypes about Philadelphia...generally a tough breed of person, probably a bit louder than your average American, etc. There is an element of 'New Jersey' stereotypes in there that Philadelphia seems to share to some degree.

Granted we're working with stereotypes here. All cities will have all kinds of different people. But, just curious how Baltimoreans would differentiate themselves from Philadelphia types of people...or even others from further up north, like New Jersey or even NYC.

Default Small town vibes comes with small thinking..

"..I feel that Baltimore had much more to offer than Pittsburgh but less than Philly or NY. One of my favorite elements of Bmore is that it has a urban yet smaller town vibe.... best of both worlds.."

*Small town vibes comes with "small time thinking. Later for that!!

Pittsburgh likes to compare itself to Baltimore- which I dont think that is reasonable from the few visits that I have experienced in iron city- but that is a limited opinion. Cant go anywhere without running into someone I know- try doing that in NY.

I'd be curious about the diffences in fashion styles, musical choices, and sports...in general.

I've lived in Philadelphia my entire life and just moved down here to Baltimore a few months ago. I kept hearing "baltimore is just a smaller version of philly" before I moved, and I still don't understand the comparison. Besides both cities being somewhat overshadowed by larger nearby metro-areas (philly - NYC, bmore - DC), there aren't really many other similarities. Philadelphians are kind of known for being "rude", but I think it's really that we don't hold back. If we don't like someone or something, we don't pretend that we do. When I first moved here, I was somewhat taken aback how people would just start up conversations with others they don't even know. That's just something we don't really do in Philly. Not because we want to snub people, but probably due to the defensiveness that just comes with living in a larger city. As for our sports teams, we love to hate them, but will completely defend them if an "outsider" starts talking smack. The city went completely NUTS when the Phils won the World Series a few years back... so nuts that parts of Center City and South Philly were left in shambles. I was afraid something like that would happen here in Baltimore when the Ravens won the Super Bowl, but was really pleasantly surprised everyone managed to keep it peaceful.

Welcome to Baltimore, Maryland!!

Thanks for your insightful and respectful input!! Interestingly enough, I agree with some of your statements. I feel the comparisons are subjective on a smaller scale when analyzing the 2 cities. As you already indicated, "both of these cities are in the shadows of larger metropolises." This can be both advantageous, and "not so" advantageous in my perspective. The differences far outweigh the similarities, but I do find delight in find some closeness I've found in "some" cultural, social and other circles. Having family and friends in either both cities, having spent summers, holidays in Philadelphia..there is a rough, tough love that I feel that encompasses the city. Knowing Philly's outrageous history, the people, the culture and all these dynamics..I truly understand.

*Peaceful are for putzes!!! You just won the Super Bowl..there is no time for being passive. Express you excitement considering the fact that most of the NFL never thought you'd make it to the dance.

Wow, never thought I'd see the day when Baltimore would be criticized for being too peaceful!
