Almost everyone I know sells their house in Baltimore and buys a bigger house in the middle of no where in Pennsylvania. What is that all about? If I were to move out of Baltimore, it's going to be to some place with better weather. San Diego, Sarasota or Hawaii.

Well half of the old time residents of Baltimore have roots in PA.. so going to PA to "die" is no different than retiring to Carolinas or Georgia.. Not everyone wants to go California, Hawaii or Florida if they have extensive family in Baltimore and on a fixed income..those places could be expensive..especially retiring from a Blue Collar job.... I have heard that PA taxes are low for retirees/seniors? Additionally... its close enough to Bmo to be convenient to visit but far enough away from the urban lifestyle issues such as traffic, taxes, and crime.. Some may like the rural appeal of say a York County.. and the housing is definately cheaper much more space and quiet.. Keep in mind.. you need to think like a 50, 60 or 70 year old not like a 20 or 30 something.......

Its not that many Baltimoreans have TIES to PA its just that Pennsylvania specifically York County PA is cheaper for many Baltimoreans and residents in the suburbs who are looking for an urban environment with an easy commute to Baltimore. Its right up I-83.

Interesting...I'd always thought that Delaware was the place where Marylanders went to die cheaply...lots of tolls on the Freeways, but not much else in terms of taxes. In fact, I've known many people, ostensibly Philadelphians, but who live in Northern Delaware-"Philadelphia with tax advantages" is how they describe it.
Old joke:
"Hey, did you know the DuPonts have a little spread just South of Philly?"
"Yeah, it's called Delaware."

Do the Duponts still RULE Delaware or Wilmington? I know that they used to do alot for the City back in the day. I dont know if Baltimore ever had a Dupont like family that ruled the City? Or did we?

I have a couple of friends that bought in York, PA a few years ago. Bad decision....they are trying to move back to Baltimore, but they have lost $$$ and are upside down in their mortgages.

Those who sell their homes in Baltimore City need to depart anyway. Most likely they're hillbillies who don't own any stakes and lack influence in the city anyway. Good riddance!
