I responded to an ad in the Bangor for a Level One Tech support position at Microdyne in Orono...

And they called me back today... are interested... I would only do this short term, I am sure, as Tech Support is KNOWN to have a high burn-out rate. But it is something I CAN and WOULD do.

Any inside info??

They have a nice facility just 1/4 mile from Orono exit off I-95.

There is opportunity to make good money working with Microdyne. There is a high burnout rate, but they do also hire a lot of young people in college. If you're looking at it as something to try as a "starter", I'd say go for it. I'd also suggest you keep your eyes open for other opportunities as you go along.

tech support DOES have a high burnout rate.. and I am not one to revel in spending 8 hrs a day on the phone. I hate phones... phone tech support is one gig that I have never taken a crack at...though most of my friend have at one time or another. so I have heard a lot of "war stories" and think I have a pretty good idea what I would be getting into.

I did tech support for years. It's not easy because each call is so personality driven. On the other hand you do learn a ton about dealing with different types of people. Feel free to PM me if you want any of my stories from the trenches.

I'm in computer manufacturing/service, I get frustrated with trying to "help" people over the phone. It's easier to just look at it and do what needs to be done. Very often, people are unable to adequately describe the problem they are having in a manner that will permit correct diagnosis of the trouble. Some people try to make it seem like they know more than they do (because they don't want to look completely stupid) and use terms that they don't really understand- using them incorrectly and confusing the hell out of whoever is trying to help.

yeah. OH yeah. I do not expect it to be an EASY job.. I know even helping them in person (which I DO quite often) can be frustrating. But from having been on the receiving end of phone tech support I am pretty sure I can do as well. And I will have (what I think at least is a big advantage) of being a native English speaker.

Just stick to the flowchart, put them on hold, and hangup!!! Some other poor soul with have to deal with them. That is what happens to me when I call tech support. By the way, I do tech support, so I know what they do. Then you add the Indian accent, and an internet phone connection and away you go! ve av a prob lem? YES? Ah, dere r no prob lems ve canut fexx.
