I like US Cellular the best. I had Unicel years ago and they have never compared to USCC. Seems to get coverage everywhere I go.

A friend of mine lives in Old Town and has Verizon and has horrible service as did another friend who moved from Arundel to Corinth and could never get anything

I have Verizon and it seems to work fairly well...except in my house. If I go out in the yard it will work most of the time- no guarantees if its raining, snowing or foggy.

Inside the house I had to stick a magnet mount car antenna on the fridge and adapt it to the phone.

Thanks to everyone that has posted about cell phone carriers on this thread as it has been very informative. For moving back to (being built) house in Hampden next year we were all ready to jump on the AT&T bandwagon but after reading all the posts we are going to go with US Cellular.

One question though... I notice that the carriers all charge additional for roaming which I would expect however how often can I expect to be "roaming" in the Bangor area? In other words if I am just running around in that area I would imagine that I would just stay registered to the US Cellular network/towers unless a signal was not available.. is that correct? Just want to make sure I am on the right page here as it is a little different here in Germany.

VZ doesn't charge me for roaming, which I am doing all the time from the house.

When we went to Eastport, I had called Verizon and they told me I would have to pay International rates as I would be pulling from a tower in New Brunswick. I will not keep them when I move up as even that service was spotty at best.

Canadian carriers this summer started blocking Verizon from making outgoing calls via the NB cell towers. I think Verizon had to eat a ton of National Service Plan minutes when people were in Eastport. Verizon ate about $60 worth of roaming last year when I was in Eastport. I had to call them, and I told them the last time I looked, Maine was still part of the US. They promptly deducted the roaming charges. This year my Verizon phone works perfectly in Eastport for incoming calls, but no outgoing calls are possible. I guess Verizon pays the Canadians roaming fees when we receive a call, but does not pay them for outgoing calls. It is very strange. None of the messages that you get when you try to use the phone for an outgoing call make any sense. Bottom line, Verizon is useless in Eastport this summer, except for incoming calls. You can however, send and receive text messages.....which is very strange.

Interesting. I did have a rep tell me recently that I could have disputed the charges...even though I checked with 2 seperate reps before heading up that said I would be subjected to international charges. I just told everyone to not call. The only calls I received were from the car repair shop as my trany was being worked on.

I have never been charged for roaming. Sometimes it would say I was roaming but that just meant I wasn't using USCC towers but someone elses. If you make sure to get the new england plan you should be fine. And if you travel alot the national plans really aren't much higher. I had that plan for while as well.

Good luck

I think there are six bars in Old Town.

The Nekkid bowlers are actually based out of Dover-Foxcroft.

They simply bowl in Old Town.
