Another Cubs manager bites the dust! He says he wants to spend more time with his family. After the way the Cubs have been doing, I would too. He has had a long successful baseball career, but his last assignment is likely not how he would be likely to be remembered.
Lou has had great success through the years as a player and manager. He did manage Cincinnati to their last world championship in 1990, so he'll have that under his belt. He also did some great things in Seattle when he turned a previously-moribund franchise into a perennial contender. There's no question that he will be a Hall-of-Famer first ballot.
I am sure he would like this year to have gone better, but not all has been bad in Chicago. He did make the playoffs two years, and was in the race last year. This season (and to an extent last year) is just the result of an overpaid roster of free agents continuing to age and have their skills deminished.
Lou has been a good friend of my fathers for many years. In my opinion, a few years back he wanted the Yankee job. That was before Torre decided to stick around for 1 more year. Otherwise Lou would probably still be coaching for a few more.
Yahoo reports that Lou will retire today (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=ArP6GRjdCR8UNAuRZf4GQCwRvLYF?slug=ap-cubs-piniellaretires - broken link), to be with an ailing mother. He's not waiting for the end of the season.
Darned shame the Cubbies have had such a bad year, coming out on the losing end of several lopsided games.
I wish him all the best, he's a good guy and baseball man. Hopefully we'll see him in the announcer's booth in the years ahead.
