Can an American League team DH for a terrible hitter? My team, the Twins, our outfielder Hicks is a terrible hitter, but awesome fielder. Let's say we have a guy pitching who can actually hit decent, could the twins let him bat and use DH for Hicks? Or is the DH rule only for pitchers?

Only for pitchers. You may chose to allow your pitcher to bat, but you lose the DH position if you do. It is Rule 6:10
(b) The Rule provides as follows:
A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and allsubsequent pitchers in any game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game. A Designated Hitter for the pitcher must be selected prior to the game and must be includedin the lineup cards presented to the Umpire in Chief.
The designated hitter named in the starting lineup must come to bat at least one time, unless the opposing club changes pitchers. It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that game. This part of the rule was added to thwart Earl Weaver's strategy of listing the previous day's starting pitcher as DH, then pinch-hitting for him on his first at-bat with whoever was actually going to be the DH.

Opposing teams couldn't plan for who was going to be the DH. Plus, allowed manager to play to DH's strengths (L vs. R).
Thanks again. Great insights from someone who knows the game inside and out, apparently!
