MLB Umpire saves suicidal woman on Pittsburgh bridge - CNN.com

How nice of that umpire to save that woman! He deserves a lot of credit for it. I call him a hero.

Do prevented suicides always have happy endings? Does being snatched off a ledge solve all the problems which brought the person to that ledge? Is a suffering person who is spared from suicide now free from suffering? The umpire goes away a hero, but what of the rescued person?

Preventing someone's choice to commit suicide is also removing that person's right of choice in favor of your own imposed actions. It becomes you deciding for someone else that this person has to live irrespective of how miserable that life may be.

There is an episode of COPS from the early 90s that feature a segment of a distraught man threatening suicide from the same exact bridge I think. There are a few bridges that look similar in the area of the crossing named after Clemente. Whether it was the same bridge or not, viewers can see Three Rivers Stadium in the background. The story of the more recent event reminded me of the COPS episode.
