I think that MLB killed the minor leagues long ago when Branch Rickey first devised the farm system. Before that the minors were truly competitive leagues which provided fans with legitimate pennant races and a reason to follow a club all year. The introduction of the farm system changed the minors from competitive leagues to developmental leagues where at any moment, regardless of a club's position in the standings, the best players may be taken from the club and sent elsewhere.
The minors then became just processing leagues, the ML club's which owned them did not care if they won or lost anything, only that the pipeline was producing players for the ML club.
