Yes, today (Thurs.) was the first day of instant replay. MLB has finally come on board the IR train, joining all of the other sports.
While I'm OK w/ the conditions of IR, I find it odd that Selig and Co. decided to implement it in the middle of the season instead of doing it at the start of next season.
For the first time in the glorious history of MLB, instant replay was used. It occurred last night in a NY Yankees vs. TB Rays game. Appropriately enough, it involved a home run hit by Alex Rodriguez, which was upheld after the replay.
I'll bet instant replay will be something we'll love one day and hate the next, especially when it involves your team. Wait until the playoffs, and you'll see what I mean.
Managers will be allowed one challenge over the first six innings of a game and two from the seventh inning until the completion of the game. Calls that are challenged will be reviewed by a crew in MLB headquarters in New York City, which will make a final ruling.
A manager who sees a call he feels is incorrect can file a challenge with the crew chief or home plate umpire. Only reviewable plays can be challenged. Non-reviewable plays can still be argued by managers, who can request that the umpires discuss it to see if another member of the crew saw the play differently. Reviewable plays cannot be argued by the manager.
Challenges not used in the first six innings will not carry over, and a manager who wins a challenge will retain it.
The home run replay rules currently in use will be grandfathered in to the new system, Schuerholz said
Every team is now going to need someone monitoring the game video in the clubhouse so he or she can send word to the manager that the replay will uphold him. The rules state that challenges which are upheld are not deducted from the total a manger may use, but the ones denied are. That places a huge premium on making sure the video replay will support your challenge.
Glad to see replay coming to MLB.... 10-15 years too late, but finally it'll be here.

Huh? No one has posted in the older thread for five years. This is now supposed to be a continuation of a five year old vote? I intended it to be a discussion of the new rules.

And a discussion of the new rules it will be.
So, if the challenge is denied, does the team lose a time out? And what if he tries to request one after a scoring play?
Oh, wait - those are the other guys' old rules.

One of the things I read suggested that the managers were really not going to have control of this process, but that the players would.
I would like to think that is not so.
