Before the season, I believed the Nationals were going to be competitive. It looks like the only thing they may compete for this season is a chance to challenge the 1962 Mets record for worst team in modern Major League history unless something drastic changes. Not to sound like a broken record, but I'd pretty much clear the bullpen and start new there. The hitting couldn't be much better. That's why I said they reminded me of the Rays 3 or 4 years ago. They had one of the best hitting teams and the worst bullpen. They blew too many games in the 8th inning, like the Nats do now. But, if they follow the Rays example, the Nats may be ready for their first World series appearance in 2 or 3 years.
That "last in the American League" thing was an exaggeration because only once did the Senators finish last for 3 consecutive years. They won their last pennant in 1933 and didn't win another until 1987 after they had become the Twins.
You forgot that the Twins won a pennant in 1965 when they lost to the Dodgers in 7 games.
I'm watching the Mets-Nationals series, and I'm coming to the conclusion that the Nats aren't cursed. They just don't have a pitching staff. In all the various hitting categories, they rank in the top three in the NL. When you can hit like that but still post a record of 13-32, you need some new pitchers. In fact, more than just "some."
Sandy Koufax won 3 games for the Dodgers and was his usual unhittable self. The series went the full 7 games.
I noticed your location is Elizabethton TN. Isn't that where the twins have one of their minor league teams?
Koufax was 26-8 and 2.04 that year. The following year he went 27-9 and 1.73 and then shocked the baseball world by retiring before his 31st birthday.
Yes, the Twins' Appalachian Rookie League team is here and has pretty well dominated the league in recent years. Many great players started here, including Kent Hrbek, Kirby Puckett and Joe Mauer. The Appy League has been the launching pad for such notables as Nolan Ryan, Darryl Strawberry, Mel Stottlemyre, Bobby Murcer, Josh Hamilton and many more.
