No.

If rings were everything, Russell would be better than Jordan, Magic would be better than Bird, and Brian Scalabrine would be better than Charles Barkley.

They're a contributing factor, but only one of many.

They are one piece of a big puzzle. And it also matters what that player's contribution to obtaining the ring(s) was.

Yes, as long as the guy you think is better has more. If not, then no.

championships CAN be the deciding factor. case in point tim duncan vs karl malone. malone has better total points and such but few would argue he is better than duncan. the deciding factor on 2 guys so closely matched is tims got 4 rings and karls got none.

I watched Duncan and Malone play. Duncan is a lot better in practically every way, especially defense. I definitely don't need to look at rings to know that...

most people look at numbers to define greatness. tim would need about 10 more years to tie malones scoring, he would need about 8 more years to tie his assists, and he needs almost 3 seasons to tie malone in total rebounds. now i agree tim is a better player, especially on the defensive end, but looking at the numbers alone you would have to say malone was better. now tims in his 17th and malone played 18.5 seasons and malone hardly missed any games. they both play/played with other greats, stockton being a step ahead of parker mostly. all of this would lead most people to believe malone was superior, and as a huge duncan fan id almost go for that myself but in the end tims rings put him over the top. malone could do everything, he wasnt the best defender, but he sure made up for that with his offense. tim can do everything, and plays better defense. they are about as evenly matched as 2 different players from 2 different eras can get really. in the end tim was the man for 3 of his 4 rings and the 4th he was the CO-man. malone went ring chasing in 2004 and came up short once more. he could just never get his team over the hump and he was the man on a few finals and conf finals teams. so IMO rings CAN BE an indication, but not always.
