I am nearing the end of my grad program and looking to find a career in or near Baton Rouge. My son is going to enter 9th grade fall 2015 and is interested in global/international studies. We are in Texas right now. Any suggestions what high school he ought to consider?

Well firstly most public schools here suck. Your choices are really limited to Baton Rouge High (public-magnet best in the state, fantastic programs, great student body, coed, location is close to CHS and SJA along with new developments) Catholic High School [CHS] (private, blue ribbon three times in a row, all boys, great community and involvement with the all girls school St. Joseph's Academy [SJA], but tuition runs high) and St. Micheal's (private, catholic, coed, okay but not the best in the city and it is rather far out depending on where you are going to live)

So if you are looking for a public school Baton Rouge High is the place for you. Just note that to get in is very rigorous. Catholic High is similar when it comes to admissions, but it is private. The tuition runs up to 10,000 I think, but I know they have some type of scholarship program that splits the bill with the exception that the said student does service projects for the school during the summer. St. Michael's is the odd ball in the bunch, the tuition is close to Catholic High's but it's not worth the money. Too much drama I here...and a ton of drugs.

The open houses for the schools are below if you guys can make them (and websites). They are spread out, so I would go to the BRH one if you can seeing as that would be your main choice. If you want to see Catholic I'm sure you guys could schedule to come visit during a normal school day. It falls on government like BRH, but the main entrance is off Acadian Thrwy. and down Claycut.

Sites:
Catholic High School - Baton Rouge, Louisiana
About The School - Powered By OnCourse Systems For Education (Baton Rouge High)
ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL HIGH SCHOOL

Open House Dates:
Baton Rouge High: October 16th 8:30am-11am
St. Michael's: October 22nd 5pm - 7pm
Catholic High School: November 13th 5pm-7pm

Well I hope that helps!

You can always look for a home outside of the BR city limits and find excellent public schools. Depending on where you work the commute wouldn't be terrible. Ascension Parish and Zachary have some of the best public schools in the state.

Also look into Denham Springs in Livingston parish which is to the east of Baton Rouge. Many people are moving into Livingston parish because of the better schools, lower priced real estate, less traffic, smaller town feel. I would not send my child to public high schools in Baton Rouge.

I didn't think the public high schools in Baton Rouge would be nice, either, that is why I am looking into the nearby parishes of Baton Rouge. We may also be looking at Lafayette or even between Lafayette and Baton Rouge.

I'd consider Zachary or Central city schools. Both have their own independent district. Zachary is one of the best performing districts in the state (if not the best).

Don't bother with Baton Rouge public schools. I can't say enough bad things about them.
