We drove over to Salem today. The highway is well plowed, but coated with ice. It snowed on us all the way over. Visibility was OK except for some brief patches with blowing snow. Snow turned to rain just beyond Detroit Lake.

Coming home, snow started near the Detroit dam and snowed all the way over the pass. Visibility was poor, with low cloud cover, meaning fog, in addition to the heavy snow fall. Chains were required and the road was really slick.

My little front wheel drive with the studded tires would have handled it with no problems, but I didn't want to try it with the big 4WD towing a cargo trailer, so the family chauffeur drove me over and back.

I wouldn't have done it if I didn't have to. Long lines of traffic were backed behind any vehicle going slower that traffic wanted to move. If you have to go, plan a lot of extra time because traffic was moving about 35 mph, except when an extra cautious person backed traffic up.

80 degrees a couple days ago, digging out my cold and rain gear for possible snow showers for an early hike tomorrow. Welcome to The High Desert.

Lupine and Balsam root are getting ready to bloom. I notice both those flowers are a much smaller variety here than in Western/Eastern WA.

I woke up to snow flurries this morning in Bend, as I prepared for a hike today. It is one of those "be ready for anything hikes"....apparently.

Was so nice to wake up and see heavy snow fall on the SW side of Bend. I usually do not get to experience this as I am in Maui Nov-Apr.

That said I was still able to get out for a good MTB ride later in the day.
