January 3, 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the East Rift Zone eruption from the Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō vent, which has been more or less continuous since then. Volcanoes National Park is marking the occasion with a month of special events including presentations on how the Kilauea volcano's "plumbing" works, how they monitor and predict volcano and earthquake activity, the current status of the eruption process, plus presentations of traditional Hawaiian music and hula, and Native healing practices.

In addition, a free admission day is scheduled for Monday, January 21, 2013, and Kiluaea Military Camp (KMC) will hold an open house the same day, opening all their facilities to the public. KMC is a former US Military camp located within the NPS boundaries which operates today as a resort for military and retired military personnel.

For more information, and a full calendar of scheduled events, consult the NPS webpage:
Schedule Of Events - Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

Lots to do!

Whoa ho! It seems our little leaky volcano is a real pussycat compared to several other volcanoes that are considered to be in danger of imminent eruption...

The science program Nova, on PBS, has a new featured documentary called "Doomsday Volcanoes," concerning three Icelandic volcanoes (Katla, Hekla, and Laki), any one of which, on its own, could be much more problematic and damaging than their last eruption (2010 at Eyjafjallajokull) and if going off together could potentially alter the climate all the way down here in the tropics.

If you can't catch the broadcast, you can view the show on PBS.com

Referencing the above highlighted verbiage, if you read the TOS, you'll find that kind of language prohibited. Just a heads up...

There's another new PBS series that is quite interesting, called "Life on Fire," about living in the vicinity of volcanoes.

On the last show they made the comment that Kilauea is both the most active volcano in the world, and the safest, because it keeps dribbling out lava rather than building up any explosive pressure.

Does this mean that, the other 11 months of the year, people tend to be unaware of the volcano? What about the vog?

Sorry, I couldn's resist. :-) Interesting post, and I wish my wife and I could be there for the festivities, but a trip to the BI isn't in our budget for this year, alas...

We were right there a few months before it started, stupidly climbing and taking pictures down in the rift, ignoring the no warning signs. Doesn't seem like 30 years.

Nope, doesn't seem like all that long at all, and it's a mere eyeblink in volcano time, I think. Geologic time is much slower than people time.

Hey, does this mean we can go bowling at the KMC bowling alley on Monday? That could be fun.

Yes, absolutely.

Of course, you can go bowling at the KMC bowling alley, or go to the snack bar, or restaurant, or bar, or video game arcade, or laundromat any time. You just have to pay the Park gate fee to get there before 6pm. After 6 the gate is open. But Monday is free entrance to the park all day.

Most folks who live in the area buy annual passes, and use the park and KMC a lot. The KMC theater is a very popular concert venue. The KMC Chapel is popular for weddings.

Also, if you are 62 or older, you can buy a lifetime pass (good at all NPS locations) for $10 at the gate, or $20 online. It's good for a whole carload.
