With all this lava potentially advancing on Pahoa - it got me thinking, should the Federal Government or the State of Hawaii take by Eminent Domain Lava Zone 1 and 2? It seems to not make sense to have a town or residences in those areas.

Why not make it a national park area? Is there really a downside? Buy people out - make it public - and people can relocate.

Would impact the following:

Leilani Estates, Kapoho, Black Sand Beach, Nanawale Estates, Hawaiian Beaches, Hawaiian Shores, Hawaiian Parks, Kehena, Puna Beach Palisades, Kalapana Seaview Estates, Kaimu-Makena Houselots, and of course Pahoa.

Wouldn't that be extremely expensive? Plus, where would it stop? What if Mauna Loa or Hualālai start erupting? Would the government buy up properties in the lava's path then as well?

Umm, according to my insurance policy, a lot of OceanView is also in zone 2.
Why stop there though, living in a flood zone? Eminent Domain.
House along an active fault? Eminent Domain.
Live near land that hasn't been thinned of growth and is a forest fire waiting to happen? Eminent Domain.

Seriously though, it's not a bad question and I'm not necessarily arguing, just pointing out that a lot of folks choose to live in risky areas. Think of what one good tsunami might do to most any low-lying coastal community.

When lava is bearing down on you - probably not expensive. And real estate isn't expensive in zone 1 and 2.

You have to start somewhere and zone 1 and 2 seem like a good place to start. Something is better than nothing. Right?

Exactly. Why not buy out San Francisco (and Oakland while we're at it).

Well. In Eminent Domain. You don't get a choice.

For those who say floods. You can rebuild. Earthquakes. New building codes. It's survivable. Hurricanes. Storm shutters. Tornadoes. Rebuild.

Lava. If it can't be diverted, you can't do anything in your lifetime. You can't rebuild immediately.

I refer you to Kalapana Vacation lots, previously Kalapana Gardens. Over 100 houses burned there in 1989-90. There are about 35 houses there now, the first was built just a couple of years later, actually it was a 35' trailer. There's always somewhere to stay elsewhere in the meantime, especially with so many chickens fleeing.

Uhmm that is a very uneducated question. Try to educate yourself before asking some 30,000 plus thousands of people to take a hit that the government can't do without a Federal $ to do. Your asking to take more than a quarter of the island bigger than Oahu do you realize? that doesn't even take into account of half of Puna which is all in Lava zone standings... Do you realize that Lava zone 3 at moment could be taken out before Lava zone 1 and 2? Try to have some heart. And don't even question if Mauna Loa goes ........ OK Oahu buy all of Big Island but northern tip. And put everyone in a refuge camp in your back yard.
