I don't see any listing for over the air NPR on the Kona side - is there a local repeater?
PBS TV I assume is on cable/satellite but I would miss NPR.

Outta luck for NPR. Don't know if you can stream it over the internet.

We do get PBS on Oceanic Time Warner cable.

Ouch. And you call this paradise?

I would miss my free-for-the-small-donation local NPR, 3 separate program schedules/frequencies, picked up anywhere on the homestead with a battery radio, boombox or stereo receiver.

I guess you could stream it on an Iphone...

Just another one of the 1,001... oops, 1,002 ways Hawai'i is different from the mainland.

There is an island-style NPR, called KKCR: Kaua'i Community Radio. It's available online at kkcr.org. I don't know if the other islands have a local listener-supported station.

I am able to pick up Hawai'i Public Radio (HPR-2) from Maui when I am driving on the belt highway in West Hawai'i. It appears that they have just recently raised enough money to construct a transmitter tower on the Big Island.

I'll check tomorrow and let you know but I think you can. If Shorty can get it from Maui, that would work, wouldn't it? I know you can hear NPR in Waimea, they have two repeaters up there so you switch stations just on the Hilo side of Waimea and get clearer reception. I'm pretty sure you can hear them in Kailua-Kona, but I haven't specifically checked. There is a Maui station that isn't too bad on that side, though, so my DH likes to listen to that when we are on that side. We just miss being able to pick up that Maui station when we get home. Perhaps if we put up a tall outside antenna....

Aloha, this is Hawaiʻi Public Radio responding. Please find more at hawaiipublicradio.org, and follow us on Facebook/hawaiipublicradio.

At this writing (May 13, 2015), we have two programming streams available throughout much of the state.
In West Hawaiʻi, find HPR-1 (national news magazines, like Morning Edition, and classical music) at 95.7FM (K239BV).
HPR-2 (news, local talk, and more music) is at 88.7 FM (KHPH).
Both deliver excellent signals to the Kona side.

Thanks to our West Hawaiʻi members who pulled together to make the KHPH transmitter a reality and to support the station in other ways.
