just for fun I calculated the cost to build a floating bridge from the Big Island to Maui (30 miles) using parts from the floating dock

www.candock.com

Cost would be around $33-34 million. That would not include handrails.

Now thats about the cost of 177 ft of the train tracks in Honolulu so I totally think this is doable.

So where can I get a loan?

Where did Oahu get their loan?

Through the Alenuihaha channel, eh? Should be interesting.

I would think a tunnel would be the way to go. It appears the max depth is only around 6,000 ft and a good part of the route is downhill and you could just take your foot off the brake and coast that part

How 'bout a tunnel between Oahu and Molokai and then another one between Molokai and Maui? The Pailolo Channel between Maui and Molokai is only about 850 feet. Even the Kaiwi Channel between Molokai and Oahu bottoms out at a mere 2,200 feet.

I'm sure the people of Molokai would have no objection to a four-lane expressway carrying thousands of cars daily barreling through their wide-open land.

Nah, you guys are totally missing the logical solution.
Install a zip-line from Mauna Kea on the BI to Hana on Maui and a return line from Haleakala on Maui to Hawi on the BI.
Cheap, easy and fuuuuuuun!

If the Superferry was unsuccessful, it's highly unlikely that a bridge would work out.

Yup! Way more fun!

Actually, I kinda wonder why there's not a zip line from the Waipio Lookout down into the valley with a ski lift to get them back out.

Probably because the Waipio Valley folks aren't that fond of the tourists they get now, those that are brave enough to walk or drive down. Though they love the ones that have to be towed out
