I've never had a pet bird but I'm with you. I'd love to see information on wild birds as well. There are no crows here and I wish I could attract them. They're my favorite birds. There are ravens but they don't have that same great call. They seem to stay right by the river about a quarter mile away.
One problem is that the same food that attracts ravens and crows attracts bears. Both the state and federal governments kill bears who hang around human dwellings. I can't be the one who causes that.
In early summer American White Pelicans arrive from the Gulf Coast. They're big and beautiful.
Yes, let's have a bird sub-section. I don't have a pet bird now, but for 20 years I kept budgies (parakeets). I they are the most underrated pet ever. Pretty to look at, easy to care for, smart, funny, and sometimes they even talk! I wish people knew more about how great they are as pets and how to take care of them properly instead of thinking of them only as "starter" pets for young children.
I have just the Nanday. My SO has an Alexandrine, a white-bellied caique, a sun conure, and a Tribella (Triton/Umbrella hybrid) cockatoo.
I'm actually looking to adopt another bird in the coming months, after my Nanday goes through his spring hormones. I'd really like another Pyrrhura kind of conure (GCC or mutation like a pineapple, maroon-bellied, black-capped), but would consider a pionus, or maybe even a Quaker depending on the particular bird.
My Nanday tends to be low in the pecking order. My GCC who passed away bossed him around a bit, and my SO's birds haven't really taken to him. However, Quakers and Nandays have been known to co-flock in the wild. That's why I'd consider a Quaker depending on the specific bird. I live in an apartment, so it couldn't be the typically loud Quaker. Oddly enough, my Nanday is not the typically loud Nanday, so if there's such a thing as a quiet Nanday, there must be such a thing as a quiet Quaker.
I used to have a female Alexandrine. My ex gave her to me as a wedding gift when we got married. She never really clicked with me--an omen for the marriage! She lives with him now. She liked my Nanday and used to preen him.
