I would love to get my kids into Homewood schools, but can't afford more than 175,000 right now. West Homewood, I know, is an option, but not very desirable. I can find some homes in the above 3 subdivisions in Shades Cahaba elementary school, but the prices lead me to believe there is something else going on with these homes.

Any thoughts on these subdivisions? Thanks!

I don't know anyone personally who lives in those little neighborhoods. But I blog on mid-century modern architecture in B'ham and I have featured those little areas. I love some of the houses in there, but they're not Edgewood-cute or Lakewood-large. There is one right now on Beckham that looks like a steal (that may be the one you're looking at). It has been for sale for a long time, but I'm not sure what that means in the whole scheme of things, as there are homes on Broadway that have been on the market more than a year. The neighborhoods appear well-kept, but I think folks shy away simply because of the proximity to Valley Avenue. I think the build quality of the homes is probably better than what you find in West Homewood, and some of the latter is in flood plain, I believe, so there is that to deal with over there. What elementary are you zoned for there? I would think it would be Shades Cahaba or Edgewood, which IMHO is better than Hall-Kent (although all Homewood schools are good).

Thank you, this is helpful. So, proximity to Valley Avenue can be bad, eh? Good to know!

The school is Shades Cahaba for most of them. I like these homes much better than West Homewood houses, so thank you for the input!
