Hi I'm going to UAB in the fall as a freshman and I am looking for the best affordable 1br apartments near UAB. My budget is no more than 600-700 dollars. Any suggestions?

Welcome to UAB!

Are you driving, biking, or walking?

Walking I'd suggest University Place Apartments next to Railroad Park.

Biking or walking gives you more range, you should check out Apartments in the Highland Park area, the best neighborhood in Birmingham. JH Berry and Blue Canoe are two leasing companies that have properties in your price range that should be pretty nice.

I lived in Southside while I attended Birmingham-Southern and loved it. My advice is to drive around the 15th Ave South area and look for rent signs. Pull off on all the side streets and I'm sure you will find a lot of great places.

Make sure you go by your prospective apartment during all hours of the day to make sure it is not too rough. Look for neighborhoods that have decent street lights and more home owners rather than rentals.

Southside is a good time and very cheap compared to other cities. Enjoy the night life and walkable terrain.

My best advice would be to be picky when finding a place if you can. Southside is spotty: some areas are great, but there are some to be avoided. The best way to know is to see the place in person, and particularly at night. That's the only time that there's any real danger: at night when walking somewhere. Enjoy it though, Southside is a lot of fun.
